CONCORDIA, Kan. (AP) — Some students at a northern Kansas high school might be feeling a little paranoid after a 22-year-old police officer spent nearly a month posing as a senior and gathering information about drug trafficking.

Concordia High School Principal Quentin Breese declined to release the names of any students who might be in trouble, but said there would be consequences for some involved in drugs, both on the school campus and within 1,000 feet of a school.

Officer Levi Herring enrolled in the school as a part-time student under the assumed name of Tom Anderson and started classes Jan. 7, the Salina Journal reported (http://bit.ly/VXwx5v). Making School Work for Mobile Students and Others

AppId is over the quota

As a public school student, I was required to read Ethan Frome four times. My family moved frequently, and, as we crisscrossed the United States, I was regularly thrown into new public schools midyear. The differences between schools were mind-boggling. There was never a common academic road map, and I often had to make sense of new and disparate rules and expectations. I crammed on local topics, like Texas history, in order to pass high-stakes tests. While I missed some content (American history before 1890), I got others in hysterical quantities (see Ethan Frome , also American history after 1890).

Sound confusing? It was. I crafted complicated narratives to convince adults of my skills. I made liberal use of the optional "Is there anything you would like to add?" boxes on college applications to help admission officers...

"Enrique, escucho!" Hemmer said, knowing it would be silly to tell him "listen" in English. The boy's family moved from Mexico to Lafayette two weeks ago.

Internships Help Students Prepare for Workplace

AppId is over the quota

Internships and job shadowing offer a close-up look at life in the workplace, yet some high school students are so focused on academics that they pass up the opportunity, or they are uncertain about their interests and don't know where to start.

But the push to improve college and career readiness and produce a better-prepared workforce is increasing the pressure on schools to build partnerships with businesses. What's more, educators realize that students are motivated when they see the relevance of what they are learning.

"The central goal is to get students out of the classroom and into the real world so they can feel and see the entire work process," said Randy McPherson, a counselor at Trezevant Career and Technology Center in Memphis, Tenn., and the American School Counselor Association's counselor of the year in 2011. "Otherwise, they don't really grasp what a day looks like or...

By Kristen A. Graham, The Philadelphia Inquirer , Pa. (MCT)

Ramping up their fight against 37 planned public school closings, a coalition including the city teachers' union, politicians, a pastor, and the head of the local NAACP chapter said Monday that the Philadelphia School District was targeting the city's most vulnerable students.

Poor students, African American and Latino students, and students with disabilities would all be disproportionately affected by the large-scale closings, according to an analysis completed by the Philadelphia Coalition Advocating for Public Schools (PCAPS).

The district is already the subject of a federal civil rights investigation into the racial patterns of its 2012 school closings, spurred by a complaint by the...
